Abstract

Artificial intelligence systems are increasingly applied for automated diabetic retinopathy screening. In this multicountry validation study, AI algorithms demonstrated high sensitivity (92%) and specificity (88%) in detecting referable retinopathy across diverse populations. Performance was consistent regardless of image source. Integration of AI into primary care workflows could reduce specialist burden and increase early detection, though ethical oversight and continuous algorithm auditing are essential.
