Telehealth Diabetes Education for Rural Adults: Effects on HbA1c and Self-Management

Abstract

Rural populations face structural barriers to comprehensive diabetes education. A telehealth program delivering individualized nutrition counseling, medication literacy, and problem-solving skills reduced HbA1c by 0.6 percentage points at six months compared with usual care. Engagement was highest when synchronous video visits were combined with asynchronous text follow-ups. Health systems should invest in broadband access and device support to close digital gaps.
